When a Country Cracks Down on Contraception: Grim Lessons from the Philippines, Emily Rauhala, TIME World (via pinoytumblr)
Problem is, the church doesn’t believe in statistics, only its own teachings matter.
Er, isn’t that what the CBCP want us to do with them?
DON’T STOP HAVING KIDZ! PUT THEM TO WORK! BIRTH CONTROL IS THE DEVIL’S WORK!
Kenney added that when Dr. Bernie Villegas, a population expert and the vice-president of the Opus Dei-run University of Asia and the Pacific, met with the US embassy’s political section chief, Villegas -
A separate cable – this time sent on July 15, 2005 from the US Embassy incommented that he had heard there was “an informal understanding” between Malacanang and the Church that the GRP would not push for HB 3773 “under any circumstances.”
A separate cable – this time sent on July 15, 2005 from the US Embassy in Vatican City – confirmed that Vatican had given marching orders to the Philippine bishops not to join anti-Arroyo protests.
Brent Hardt, the US Deputy Chief of Mission and Chargé d’Affaires at the Vatican wrote then that:
¶1. (C) Holy See Country Director for the Philippines Monsignor Luis Montemayor confirmed July 14 that the Vatican pressured the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) not to support protests calling for the resignation of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
Raisa Robles - RH bill was killed by Pres. Gloria Arroyo in exchange for Church political support
When it comes to wanting and asking for something, everybody suddenly turns religious. In this case, the bishops have evoked ‘god’ into acquiring something, that and offering their support to a fucking animal.
Open your eyes, people, and stop supporting the ass hats who use your God’s name for personal gain and to exploit the poor. Or, at the very least, start questioning them.
It doesn’t have to be like this. Other Catholic countries aren’t in a shit hole like we are.
I can’t believe the gall (or ignorance) of some of the fools who are defending these bishops who solicited and received public funds (whether in cash or in kind). The Philippine Constitution clearly states:
To the wide-eyed blind who say it’s not crime to solicit and take receipt of a 4x4 vehicle bought with public funds, may I just quote the Philippine Constitution:
“No public money or property shall be appropriated, applied, paid, or employed, directly or indirectly, for the use, benefit, or support of any sect, church, denomination, sectarian institution, or system of religion, or of any priest, preacher, minister, or other religious teacher, or dignitary as such, except when such priest, preacher, minister, or dignitary is assigned to the armed forces, or to any penal institution, or government orphanage or leprosarium.”
And THAT is that end of that, bitches.
We assure you that the bishops concerned are ready to accept responsibility for their action and to face the consequences if it would be proven unlawful, anomalous, and unconstitutional. We assure you that their action was done without malice. Out of their sincere desire to help their people, they failed to consider the pitfalls to which these grants could possibly lead them. They have also expressed their readiness to do everything that is necessary to heal this wound so that we can all move forward in hope.
We also assure you, our beloved people, that we shall re-examine the manner of our collaboration with government agencies for purposes of helping the poor, making sure that pastoral sensibilities are respected and the highest ethical standards are observed. We shall examine our values in the light of our vocation to be disciples of Jesus Christ. We commit ourselves to the long journey of personal and social transformation required of all disciples of the Lord. We plead with you to walk with us in this path of constant renewal.
CBCP Pastoral Letter re: PCSO issue
Can we hold you to that?
Edit:
Also, I fail to see how ridin’ durty in a Pajero can be part of a “sincere desire to help…people”. Unless of course, said Pajero somehow housed a classroom or a hospital or something.
We’ve all heard stories about how the NPA collects “taxes” especially in rural areas. We’ve also heard stories (in my case, I have even experienced) how members of the PNP try to extort money from ordinary citizens. A traffic cop flags you down for an IMAGINED traffic violation and wouldn’t let you go until you’ve given him lunch money — that kind of thing. For business owners, it’s more than lunch money. In the case of restaurants and bars, it’s more of a regular payment so that cops don’t come raiding the establishment because of some vague violation or complaint.
In short, in both cases, NPA and PNP, it’s protection money. Even the term “protection” is misleading. It’s more of “we will leave you alone” money. It’s payment made so that you’re in their good graces — you’re not disturbed, you don’t get accused, you don’t get raided, you don’t get hurt.
And I’ve come to realize that the PCSO has been donating to the Catholic church following the same principle. Every administration wants its peace with the Catholic church. And I’m not just talking about the national administration but also local governments. This, after all, is a country where priests deliver speeches from the pulpit about whom to vote and not to vote. No mayor, governor or congressman looking for a second or third term wants his name in the “not to vote” list of any bishop or parish priest.
“Itong mga vehicles na galing sa charity fund… maaaring questionable dahil ang PCSO, hindi nagdo-donate ng luxury vehicle,” Juico said.
Why would Priests even need luxury? Isn’t it against their vow of poverty?

Moral authority my ass
I like how some people call Asians minorities.A world map, to scale, based on each country’s population.
Look at the size of the Philippines.
Who is making the stupid argument that we’re not over-populated?
To put this into perspective, the Philippines has about 1/3 the population of the U.S. yet is just slightly larger than one of its 50 states, California.
The irrational, simplistic, and unrealistic premise that we could (or should) be producing enough to feed and house an increasingly urban population is the same head-in-the-sand mindset that would rather believe that Filipinos can be persuaded to abstain from sex instead of using condoms.

What we’re looking at here folks, are a bunch of hypocritical assholes.
